I just came back from seeing this movie and I can't stop thinking about it. It's based on the book by John Boyne about the unlikely friendship that blooms between the 8-year old son of a concentration camp kommandant and one of the Jewish children in the camp and it's, to put it simply, devastating. I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach when the final credits started rolling - there were tears in my eyes and I'm pretty sure I had an expression of complete horror on my face. Everyone in the theatre sat in stunned silence for a good few minutes before slowly starting to stir and file out. There was no discussion, no commentary...just silence. As we exited, one of the cinema attendants asked us with a smile if we'd enjoyed the movie. The woman just in front of us turned and said, wryly, "Well, I don't know if I enjoyed it, but I'll be bringing my children to see it".
See it, really. I think it reaches Canada in November sometime.
