I was sitting on the Tube yesterday, occupying myself by reading all the advertisements around me, when I found this one by The Times for a national spelling bee:

If GH can stand for P in Hiccough

If OUGH can stand for O in Dough

If PHTH can stand for T in Phthisis

If EIGH can stand for A in Neighbour

If TTE can stand for T in Gazette

If EAU can stand for O in Plateau

Then the way you spell POTATO is...

GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU.

Isn't it?

It made me laugh out loud :D. No wonder so many people find English a difficult language...even those who speak it as a first language!
